Race question and snippets of my life

I'm still alive for those of you who have been wondering. Just busy. busy. busy! (tis the season :)
I have a question for y'all. Since most of you are more experienced at this running/racing stuff than I am...

How do you pick which races and how many you will do in the upcoming season?

I'm fairly competitive and I love swag, so I'm thinking races will help keep me motivated. Just so we're clear, I know I will not place, (At least not this year!), but there is no way I won't give everything I have!

Any advice/suggestions would be welcomed!!

Saturday night was Mike's family Christmas with his Mom's side of the family. Lots of food and lots of fun. What else would we do when it is 16 degrees out, but go for a hay (sleigh) wagon ride?
Yep. 16. degrees. Brrrr.......

But oh so fun!

Too cold for ya? How about a pinata? Not your style? How about homemade ice cream? Cards? Presents?

Yep, we had it all. I'm so lucky to be a part of this family!

I somehow managed to take a picture of everything but the food spread. Incredible! I tasted a little of everything I wanted (and may have had 2 pieces of fudge), but I didn't go crazy. I'm okay with that. AND I ran before we went, so I wouldn't be as tempted :)
This is Mike and I at his Dad's side of the fam party today.
And yeah, he totally rocks the flannel ;)
A little more low key today. Fine by me!
I'm snuggled in now, watching the pack (Packers) and thinking I'll be in bed by 9pm!! Laugh if you must, but dude, I get up at 430am.

  1. So happy to find your blog. I can already tell that I will love it! How do I choose a race? Well, I do have to say that I want to run the Nike Women's Half Marathon just for the Tiffany's necklace at the end! :) I also go for location and reputation. I think my next one will be the Newport Marathon here on the Oregon coast. It is small but I hear great things about it!

  2. Thank you so much for my little gift - it arrived today! :) Absolutely perfect, since I generally stubbornly refuse to purchase anything for myself, including music!

I pick races by location and bling. Either it has to be convenient or in a cool enough location that it's worth the hassle of getting there, and I am a sucker for good bling!

  3. Looks like you had an awesome Christmas! :0) I usually chose races that are fairly close to home...usually ones that I can drive to and spend a night in a hotel then come home.

  4. Looks like great fam time. Yay! Hope you guys had a great Christmas. From the looks of your next post, YOU did. Score! :)

The first year I was baffled at the whole picking races thing, but over the year learned to read/review multiple resources to find as many possible races as possible. Then, I'd pick by date, location, cost, and distance of the race (the actual race, not TO the race). For example, I'm still trying to get a 15K on my schedule. Hope that helps!

    *hugs* from Orlando!

I have lots of dreams.  They include everything from sheep to road bikes to my dog actually listening to me...

I also LOVE to take pictures.  I mean LOVE.  Sometimes I go weeks without taking a single picture. Weird right?  Why not do something I feel that passionately about, everyday?

Here are some of my most recent pictures:

I live in Wisconsin and feel blessed that there are so many beautiful things for me to take pictures of.  When you're obsessed with barns and farm animals like I am, they're but a country road away!

I'm going to slowly try to find myself again.  For the hundredth time.  I am sorry if that is all I write about here on this blog now, but hey - blogs are journals of a sort.  They just happen to be public ;)

Yet again...

January 2014.  I'm supposed to be uber fit, an organic farmer and self employed by now.

I. Am. None. Of. Those. Things. Not even one.  For a while, I felt like a big loser, but then I realized:

Ugh.  Yep, it's all me.  I wish. A LOT.  I DO. Very little.  I have no one or no where to place the blame, but on me. I have the tools and the knowledge, I choose to ignore both and do nothing.  It all comes down to choices.

How do I start?  Where do I start?

At the beginning. AGAIN.

-So, I've joined Weight Watchers (I wonder if there is a record for how many times a single person has started and stopped Weight Watchers?  I'd probably win).

-I'm planning my garden and new chicken coop.

-I'm baking bread today (yes, I realize this may impact WW, but homemade bread!!!)

-I'm beginning to make what I can, whether it be food or beauty products.

Too much all at once?  I have no idea.  Will I fail?  I certainly hope not.

I welcome any thoughts, advice or ideas.

And if you …

Proof that I occasionally finish what I start...

New throw pillow covers I made a couple of weeks ago! Finished and started the same day :)  (Sorry the pics aren't the greatest.) I love making these.  They are super quick and easy and are an inexpensive way to change your decor.  Yes, I realize that they don't match each other and yes, they are all on the same couch.  We have a sectional and they're spread out. Besides that, I am eclectic and my home reflects that about me! I'm going to try to take pics of my quilt top tomorrow (read: bribe Mike into doing it for me).  It's been sitting folded up in a drawer since last year. :(  I need to quilt it because: A. It's my first quilt and B. I love it and can't wait to use it!! I've been throwing a lot of love out there in the quilt world the last couple of days, because I am flat out with an injured back.  So to all of you whom I've visited or will visit, thank you.  You're keeping me sane!!  Trish
